salute / signal cannon (black powder & large cartridge)

These are found on board boats, (sail, power and ships) and at many yacht clubs. The best way to describe salute cannon is to show them at "home", click here to see many beautiful, and historic yacht cannon. 
Salute cannons are also found at Military installations, Boy Scout camps and at football games amoung many other places.

There are literally hundreds of salute cannon dating back hundreds of years.  It is next to impossible to trace many of these.  Many are very similar to other manufacturers models.   Famous names included; Brown, Strong, Winchester, Herreshoff and Hall.

The Strong Firearms Company, New Haven , Connecticut, was started in 1884 by Horace H. Strong.  Around Circa 1889 Levi T. Snow became the Proprietor and his name then appears on the cannon. They made at least 4 different cannon in 10 sizes.

Saluting cannon, Model 1898 Black, by Winchester, fires 10 gauge blanks. Originals were either the black or chrome models (1901 - 1958).  Most recent additions are one being made of brass and another of bronze.

"Remember the Maine", Circa 1899 Rare! Made by the W.S. Hawker Manufacturing Company in Dayton, Ohio.  Shoots with 12 gauge blanks. The barrel tilts down, allowing the breach to be opened for inserting the shell. There is also a model made in chrome.

C1890 Ives Manufacturing Company - Ives produced two sizes of their signal cannon.. One was 12 inches long and fired no. 44 long or short center fire cartridges. The 17 inch model fired No. 12 paper or brass shells.

This bronze cannon was offered by Hartley and Graham in the 1880's & 90's. There were both breech and muzzleloading types.
1. Circa 1830 This heavy, cast iron black powder cannon was on a English sailing ship.
2. Circa 1850 This is a cast iron, black powder cannon, believed to have been made in the USA.
3. Saluting cannon, Circa 1910 offered by Bannermans war surplus catalog. This one came with various implements, powder bags, and friction primers.
4. Circa 1900 This unusual, heavy, cast iron cannon also used black powder.

This naval cannon has roots back to 1904. designed by Francis Granger Hall, Jr., who started the Naval Electric Company. He also designed and sold Lyle guns. The company later changed its name to the Naval Company (Circa 1920). This company changed hands Circa 1937.

The 10 gauge muzzle loader and 10 gauge breech loading cannon were made by the "New" Naval Company.  Notice how the first cannon is similar to the Strong cannon above.

This 10 gauge breech loader has roots back to the original Naval Company. However these models were made by the "New" Naval company (Founded 1937). Notice the similarity to the Winchester cannon above.   The cannon on the left is in the collection of  Matt McLaughlin.

A 1920's Catalogue No. 51, in titled, W.W. Greener's, Sporting Guns and Accessories offered this pedistal type 8 gauge cannon.   Greeners had showrooms located in London, and Montreal, Canada.  The manufacturer is unknown.

These are excellent copies of the smaller 10 gauge Strong cannon, made during the 1970's by the North River Corporation in Alpine, New Jersey.  A picture of a duck with "NRC" appears on top of the barrel, just a head of the breech.
