Even within the lighter family, there are different methods to produce the flame. The most common is by a small friction wheel that rubs against a flint to produce the spark. The spark then ignites the gas, or the fuel on the wick. Some are automatic, a simple push of a button opens a "trap door" to expose the wick, and at the same time creating a spark. "Sorta like a
regular lighter..."  Today, there are a dozen different types of cannon lighters, mostly butane types.
