Cannon Lock installation and operation

There are different ways to mount the cannon lock, depending on your barrel. The nipple requires a 5/16 by 24 tpi (threads per inch) tapped hole.  Drill the existing fuse hole (vent hole) to accommodate the 5/16 x 24 tap.  Lay the mounting plate such that the nipple protrudes through the front, larger hole.  Mark the location for the mounting hole.  Drill and tap (shallow) to accommodate the brass ¼ 20 machine screw.  Use a "bottom" tap for the 1/4 20 holes.
Caution! Be careful when drilling and tapping the holes.   Don't force the tap.

You can also mount the lock without drilling & tapping holes for mounting.  Add leather straps to the lock plate by riveting straps to both mounting holes and then adding a buckle.  The buckle will end up being beneath the barrel and the lock will be sideways on the cannon.  See the sketch below.

Load the cannon in the usual manner and puncture the powder bag through the nipple using a small brass or copper rod or stiff wire.  Put a musket cap on the nipple and “cock” the hammer by tilting it back.  Make sure the lanyard is in the grove on the bottom of the hammer.   Untangle and straighten out the lanyard.  When ready to fire, give a short sharp snap while holding the lanyard handle.

Always swab the bore properly between each shot.
Make sure no one is or will be moving in front of the cannon as it is about to be fired.
