How to reload plastic & all brass blanks

There's no need to invest in a expensive shot shell reloader to load a few blanks.  It's fairly easy to do and only takes a few minutes.  Use caution.  Work in a clean area.  Don't smoke and make sure there isn't any flame near by.

For either brass or plastic shells, knock out the old primer.  Set the shell on a base with a hole in it such that the primer can drop out. Insert a 1/4 inch rod into the center of the shell and tap it with a hammer.  The old primer will come out.

Step 2
Insert new primer. We use Winchester's shotshell primer no. 209.  Simply put the primer in the hole and force it in using a small arbor press or a drill press, such that the entire surface area of the primer is being pushed.  Make sure it is pushed down so it is flush.

Step 3

Pour in black powder.  Use ffg black powder only.
Fill the shell to about 1/4 inch from the top.  Tap the shell so the powder settles to about 1/2 inch from the top.  Insert a 1/2 inch thick fiber wad.

(Roll crimpers are made in different sizes)

Crimp plastic shell.  Put the roll crimper in the drill press. Put the shell in a vice or some type of holder to prevent it from spinning.  Run the drill press at slow speed.  Lower the crimper down over the plastic shell and push it down slightly.  The plastic edges will bend inward and push the wad down and seal it.

This takes a little practice.

Step 4a

For brass shells, simply insert the fiber wad and push it down so that it is 1/8 inch below the shell rim. Using small washers as spacers will help you accomplish this.

Fiber wads are made in all sizes!

Use a good glue or wax and seal the wad in place.
